Pineapple Lane

Pineapple Lane publishes dual-language, mother tongue books for children. Each title is written, translated and illustrated by authors and artists whose lives have been disrupted by conflict. All the titles we publish are available for free to displaced families, to help children stay connected to the language and culture they have left behind. The books are also free to the communities where displaced families are living, to enable cultural exchange and understanding. With the support of schools, libraries and other organisations, we are able to distribute the books throughout the UK and into Europe.

HP

HP’s Turn to Learn partners with publishers, printers, paper mills, and nonprofits to donate printed books to children in need around the globe. The books are developed specifically to support their educational and emotional development, particularly in times of crisis. The Turn to Learn initiative launched in 2020 as part of HP’s ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide that affects many young learners and as an immediate response to the school closures that resulted from pandemic lockdowns. Since 2020, Turn to Learn has donated more than 265,000 educational packets and dual-language books to school children in Haiti, Canada, and the U.S, and to those displaced by the wars in Ukraine, Afghanistan and Syria.

National Literacy Trust

The national Literacy trust is dedicated to raising literacy levels across the UK. The trust is an independent charity that is dedicated to giving disadvantaged children the literacy skills they need to succeed.

They work to improve the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the UK's most disadvantaged communities, where one in three people have low levels of literacy.

Their research shows that during the initial school closures in 2020, 3 in 5 children and young people said that reading made them feel better. 3 in 10 said that reading helped them when they feel sad because they cannot see their family and friends.

Because low literacy is intergenerational, they focus their work on families, young people and children.

Pineapple Lane has partnered with the National Literacy Trust to enable children who have been displaced because of conflict to receive free books printed through this portal.

School in a Bag

Supporting the Help Make Books portal will allow us to distribute free books to children who have been affected by conflict and nature disaster  whose access to books at a time of crisis has been severely disrupted. Books offer comfort at times of need and are an essential part of a childs education.

We have partnered with some fantastic organizations to help us get books to children who need them the most.

Here in the UK we have partnered with the National Literacy Trust who work with schools and communities to give disadvantaged children the literacy skills to succeed in life. The books you buy will be given out free to 17 literacy hubs across the UK and handed out to children. They are a wonderful charity and we are delighted to be working with them.

We have also partnered with the British Library’s Living Knowledge network to make sure that we get copies of books into every library across the United Kingdom.

School in a Bag is a charity that has distributed school bags to over 50 counties and is an incredible grass roots organization. We will be working with them by offering up free books to go into their school, bags. These bags will be handed out via a huge network of partners in countries directly affected by war or disaster, countries such as Ukraine and Syria and beyond.

In Ukraine where over 2.5 million children have been internally displaced because of the appalling war we will also be working with the local bookshop communities sending boxes of books  so they can hand out books to children close to the front line and to areas where children can no longer go to school.
